There are two useful ALTO programs for using in talking to SAIL from an ALTO,
namely, TALK and DMCHAT.  TALK is now the recommended program, since it
can do certain things that DMCHAT can't (text emphasis).  Both TALK and DMCHAT
display the full WAITS character set.

With either TALK or DMCHAT (or any regular EDIT-key display):

    HOLD/UNHOLD is typed as CTRL-←
    CLEAR is typed as CTRL-↑
    Flush-output queues is EDIT-CTRL-↑
    META is gotten by prefixing with EDIT-NULL

Then you just use the Alto just like you would an EDIT-key DM (READ MONCOM
for DM usage details).

You can now use the Sail display service from the "Talk" program on an
Alto.  It is Talk.Boot on the netexec (Talk.Run on some local disks may be
an unimproved Older version; make sure you have the latest version from
[Lassen]<Alto>Talk.Run).  Just say "Talk Sail", and give SAIL the command
TTY ALTOTALK (abbrev. TT ALTO).  You can specify to both TALK and SAIL a
height different from the default (e.g., TTY ALTOTALK 54); be sure to give
both TALK and SAIL the same height.

You can talk to any host on SUNet, with windows of any size.
"Talk shasta,sail,diablo" will open three windows, one to each
host.  The Vax systems automagically know you are running Talk.

The blank keys in Talk mean:

  top = null character (000) (this is used for WAITS ESCAPE commands)
  middle = next window (Talk's control window if in last window)
  bottom = EDIT (turns on 0200 bit in character being typed)

If you use DMchat on the ALTOs to TELNET to SAIL, you can declare yourself
to SAIL as a DM128 (with TTY DM128) and then use the unlabelled keys as:

  top = null character (for WAITS ESCAPE commands)
  middle = <give DMchat command>
  bottom = EDIT

WARNING: Sometimes you may want to use both the EDIT and SHIFT keys at the
same time.  If you use the left SHIFT key on an Alto, this will throw you
into Swat, or the NetExec.  Therefore, use only the right SHIFT key whenever
you have the EDIT key depressed.
